After completing this course you’ll be able to:

  1. List 4 major reasons an individual seeks out dental treatment.
  2. Distinguish between transitory and chronic malodor.
  3. Explain why the problem of oral malodor has been largely ignored by the dental community.
  4. Provide a socioeconomic perspective to the problem of oral malodor.
  5. List seven common sources/causes of malodor.
  6. Explain the pathogenesis of oral malodor in periodontally healthy patients as well as in patients with periodontal disease.
  7. Define psychogenic halitosis and describe olfactory reference syndrome.
  8. List 4 means of identifying oral malodor.
  9. Outline the mechanical deplaquing and chemotherapeutic approach to the management of oral malodor.
  10. Outline the clinical protocol for oral malodor management and aesthetic assessment.
  11. Ask medical history questions of the patient regarding oral hygiene, diet, medications etc. to diagnose halitosis.
