Learning Objectives

  1. Understand population trends in American that contribute to the need for transcultural nursing education.
  2. Know the history and describe the theoretical premises of transcultural nursing.
  3. Explain communication skills needed to provide culturally competent nursing care.
  4. Examine internal barriers to communicating effectively across cultures.
  5. Know how various transcultural assessment instruments can be applied to culturally diverse clients.
  6. Understand how community cultural assessments can help provide culturally appropriate nursing care to individuals within that community.
  7. Describe the cultural values of Anglo-Americans and specific variations among this population in regards to physical environment and socioeconomic status.
  8. Describe the cultural values, family social structure, and communication patterns of African-Americans and know the strategies for providing effective healthcare for this population.
  9. Describe the cultural values, family social structure, and communication patterns ofHispanics, including; Mexican Americans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Central Americans, and know the strategies for providing effective healthcare for these populations.
  10. Describe the cultural values, family social structure, and communication patterns of Asian Americans, including Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Southeast Asians, and know the strategies for providing effective healthcare for these populations.
  11. Explain the racial/cultural identity model and how this theoretical framework applies to transcultural nursing practice.
  12. Know the limitations of using cultural diversity models to explain cultural variations.
  13. Explain the factors needed to provide effective transcultural nursing care to diverse populations and non-English speaking clients.
  14. Understand the importance of teaching transcultural care in nursing education programs.
